Talk to me! We are not so different, you and I.
We all want to live in a world where everyone feels included.
Although we live in the 21st century – a time with technology, space exploration and the scientific ability to create vaccines in record time to treat a deadly pandemic - we are still far from a perfect world.
In Great Britain, 2 out of 3 people admit they feel uncomfortable talking to individuals with a disability and this is mainly because people worry about saying the wrong thing. This often means that people unconsciously address their conversation or questions to other people who are with an individual with a disability, rather than that person themselves. Although this is done with good intention and in fear of accidentally appearing rude to that individual, it can come across as non-inclusive. Respecting the individual by seeing things from their point of view, learning about disability so you feel more confident and making little adjustments to how you communicate (if needed) will make for a much more inclusive world.
After all, we are all people with things in common, our own opinions to share and a desire to communicate. Whether that’s discussing our hobbies, asking questions to get to know people or just wanting to be social - there’s plenty to talk about. This also spills over into our professional working lives too; sharing our own ideas, each having our own career aspirations and having talents that can be put to good use. We really do have more in common than not.
At Ways into Work, we understand that often it’s not easy to strike up a conversation, and it can be uncomfortable to do so for the reasons above. Not only that, if you are managing a person with a disability you will want to feel confident that you can find the best way of communicating with them and getting the best out of your team member. That’s where we can help.
