A number of barriers exist for people who have a disability in relation to gaining employment, the biggest of which tends to be the recruitment process itself. A large percentage of the people we support find it difficult to articulate their skills but that doesn’t mean they can’t do the job. We encourage and work with employers to advise them how to reduce those barriers so they have access to a potentially talented workforce.
This can be achieved in a variety of ways. Our friends at Kier Construction set out to do just this. You can watch the joint presentation we made at the Highways England Supplier Diversity Forum which describes the programme Kier put together with our support, to replace the traditional recruitment process. It was an extensive programme which was uplifting for our clients and the Kier and Ways into Work staff involved. A key message here though is it can be a simple process, not one that is at all time consuming. We can:
- Look at the jobs you need to fill and what they involve
- Match them to individuals who have the skills you are looking for
- Advise you on what reasonable adjustment could be made to the recruitment process (if needed)
- Help you set up a ‘work trial’ for that individual which allows them to demonstrate they can do the job
